August 14th Music history:
1) 1985 - The Beatles and Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney and Yoko
Ono for the ATV music-publishing catalog. Jackson paid $47.5 million
for the rights to more than 250 songs written by John Lennon and Paul
McCartney.
This would sever the friendship between Paul and Michael, not to mention completely destroy the sanctity of the songs by allowing them to be in shitty commercials for shitty products. Imagine having to hear a song that you wrote, a song that had personal meaning in a fucking Pepsi commercial? I can see Paul sitting in his living room watching TV when a cheesy Car ad comes on with a family of four and their beloved Fido all getting packed up in their mid sized sedan with a goddamn picnic basket. Endless waves of green hills and abundant sunshine in the background as sis playfully tries to mess up her brothers PSP videogame by nudging his shoulder and Fido's head is out the window loving life. We are a happy family! Cue "Good day sunshine" or "drive my car". . . . . Maybe "Yesterday" is softly playing our heartstrings as a woman sits in her million dollar home sipping her fresh cup of Colombian coffee (delivered to her house by mule of course) as she stares out the window and lets out a slow but heavy sigh. . . .. . "Are you sad"? Did your significant other say you have to wait until his bonus comes in to get that new BMW? You need Prozac"! Perfectly synching up as Paul slowly croons "All my troubles seemed so far away, Now it looks as though they're here to stay". . . .. . . . . ....What the actual Fuck?!Paul had to pay him when he wanted to play his own songs for Christ sake, can you imagine having to pay someone else to play a song you wrote? Such is life though. . . . .
So here is Paul giving Michael some advice on how to make money by buying song rights and that little glittery bastard buys the Beatles. Well you can understand why Sir Paul may have been a little pissed off.
The rift would last until Michael s death even though Paul says he lost most of the animosity throughout the years. But as many friends and associates have said he has been fuming for years about it.
I'm not sure where they are exactly as Paul doesn't like to talk about it but he has been trying to get them back and the 1976 U.S. Copyright Act says that the credited songwriters will now be
able to claim back some of their work in four years, because all songs
written prior to 1978 revert to the songwriter after 56 years.
It's the fucking Beatles. . . . . . They (and their families) should be the only people that should have any rights to these songs that have had such an impact on millions of people around the entire world and countless influences on so many bands that came after. Oh and here is my version of the new revised edition of "The girl is mine" cover:
